What Makes a Backlit Banner Different?

Standard banners are primarily designed to reflect light from the front. Backlit vinyl is formulated to transmit light through the printed material from behind.

Light Passes Through

The translucent vinyl allows illumination from inside the lightbox to pass through the graphic, making colors appear luminous after dark.

High-Density Printing

Backlit graphics can use increased print density so colors remain rich and saturated when powerful illumination shines through the banner.

Ideal for Large Lightboxes

Flexible vinyl makes it possible to produce very large illuminated graphics without the weight and handling limitations of large rigid panels.

Daytime vs. Nighttime Appearance

Your intended viewing environment matters when selecting the correct backlit printing profile.

DAYTIME
DESIGN PRINTING BACKLIT GRAPHIC

Daytime / Light Off

For graphics that will frequently be viewed without illumination, a lower-density print profile provides a more natural daytime appearance.

NIGHTTIME
DESIGN PRINTING ILLUMINATED BACKLIT GRAPHIC

Nighttime / Light On

For illuminated nighttime viewing, increased print density helps maintain stronger color saturation when light passes through the graphic.

Important: A backlit graphic optimized for nighttime illumination will normally appear darker when the lightbox is turned off. This is expected because additional ink density is used to compensate for light passing through the material.

Choose the Correct Print Density

Select the print profile according to when the sign will be viewed most often.

Single Layer Print

Recommended when the banner will be viewed primarily during the daytime or with the lightbox turned off. The graphic appears more natural without illumination, but colors may become lighter when the lightbox is illuminated.

  • Best daytime appearance
  • Lower ink density
  • Colors become lighter when illuminated

Double Layer Print

Recommended when the banner will be viewed primarily at night inside a properly illuminated lightbox. The higher-density printing helps retain deeper, richer color when strong light passes through the graphic.

  • Best illuminated nighttime appearance
  • Higher print density
  • Looks darker without illumination
Print Terminology: “Double Layer Print” refers to the higher-density ink application on the printed face. It does not mean the banner is printed on both sides. This product is produced as a single-sided backlit graphic.

How the Lightbox Creates the Effect

The illumination source sits behind the translucent printed material rather than in front of it.

Design Printing Installation Guide

Installing a Backlit Banner Graphic

Installation varies by lightbox design, but correct alignment and even tension are essential for a clean result.

1

Measure the Lightbox

Confirm the exact visible opening and mounting dimensions before ordering the replacement graphic.

2

Open the Cabinet

Access the graphic mounting area according to the manufacturer's lightbox design and remove the previous graphic.

3

Position & Tension

Center the new banner and apply tension gradually and evenly across the graphic.

4

Test Illumination

Turn on the lightbox and inspect the illuminated graphic for alignment, even lighting and proper tension.

Design Printing Installation Tip: Inspect the lighting inside the cabinet before installing a new graphic. Uneven or failed LEDs can create dark areas that may appear to be a printing problem even when the banner itself is printed correctly.

Artwork & File Preparation

Backlit printing magnifies color and density differences, so correct file preparation is especially important.

JPEG or PDF Submit JPEG or single-page PDF artwork.
CMYK Color Convert RGB, Pantone and spot colors to CMYK.
150 DPI Raster artwork should be approximately 150 dpi at final size.
Outline Fonts Convert live fonts to outlines before production.
Production File Setup: Create artwork at the exact ordered dimensions. Do not include crop marks or external bleed. Maximum file upload size: 300 MB.
Backlit Color Reminder: Backlit printing behaves differently from standard front-lit printing. Color appearance changes significantly when illumination is turned on. Choose your daytime or nighttime print profile according to the primary viewing condition of the finished sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Backlit Vinyl Banner?

It is a translucent 15 oz vinyl material designed for large illuminated lightboxes. Light passes through the printed material from behind, causing the front graphic to illuminate.

Is this the same material as a normal 13 oz vinyl banner?

No. Standard vinyl banner material is primarily opaque and designed to be viewed using front illumination. Backlit vinyl is translucent and specifically engineered to transmit light from behind the graphic.

What is the difference between Single Layer and Double Layer printing?

Single Layer uses lower print density and is recommended when daytime appearance is the priority. Double Layer uses increased print density and is recommended when the banner will primarily be viewed illuminated at night.

Will the Double Layer version look dark during the day?

Yes. Higher print density is used so the colors remain strong when light passes through the graphic. As a result, the banner will normally look darker when the lightbox is turned off.

Is Double Layer the same as double-sided printing?

No. Double Layer refers to increased print density. The Backlit Banner itself is a single-sided printed product.

What is the maximum size?

Custom Backlit Vinyl Banners can be produced up to approximately 120" × 150'.

What finishing options are available?

Available finishing includes hems, #2 brass grommets, and reinforced white nylon webbing with silver D-rings.

What artwork resolution should I use?

Approximately 150 dpi at final production size is recommended for raster artwork. Submit JPEG or single-page PDF files in CMYK color mode.
